The Chennai civic body started adopting fierce and unconventional methods such as dumping garbage or making transgender dance in order to shame property tax defaulters but as per the information given by the owners or tax payers, they raised complaints about the online tax payment facility created through online by Chennai Corporation is completely invalid. It is not fair to dishonor tax defaulters for the mistake done by the city’s civic body, said in the common review on Amarprakash builders. Here, we have provided with a real example about the sufferers. I am a house owner in Pallavaram, over past few days, I have been trying to pay my property tax. The transaction was failed in between due to some technical error. The online customer complained that the government should first set up the right system before making transgender dance in front of the default payers.
As per the social activist, they told the government officials to make the website function properly to avoid pulling the online users into trouble and create tension for them. This further decreases unnecessary queue standing in front of the corporate office or at the bank. It is a miracle when I heard that the online service designed by the government has awarded the best design model in e-governance but most of the users are completely shocked and are telling how this could happen for such an improper site functioning. The officials of the corporation told that the invalid online payment system completely hampers the collection of tax particularly from the non-resident Chennaities. This ends up in collecting only a small amount through online payment due to the glitches happening in technical side. The reply given from the government side is that, they are working in full-fledge to solve the technical problem so that tax collection through online will increase.
The government officials informed that more than 55 crore tax collection due is pending from top 50 defaulter’s list in the metro which may follow shopping malls, hospitals, educational and charitable institutions, It parks, luxury hotels, club house, banks etc. This report has driven the civic body to mention the defaulters list on its online site. But, till now, it hasn’t updated the list from the month of September, 2014. The activist stated that initially the civic body should mention the defaulters’ list in the website. By doing so, both government and people will get more transparency and the defaulters get embarrassed due to this.
For the year 2014-2015, the corporation has collected about 450 crore among the target of 550 crore as property tax which was less when compared to the year 2013-2014, collected about 480 crore upto the target of 500 crore. More property tax can be gained only if the corporation officials take necessary action. At present, the government started sending reminder message for the defaulters
